English as a Second Language

In ESL classes, students learn to understand, speak, read, and write in English for many reasons: to get a job, get a better job, go to school, become citizens, help their children in school, or live more successfully in the United States. Class lessons are based on students’ needs and interests.  Classes are offered in person and through a remote, distance-learning option.  Each level is one-year; students do not need to register again once they are enrolled in the class for the year.

After completing the online registration form, students are given an assessment to determine proper placement. Open enrollment is available on a "space available" basis.

ESL CLASS LEVELS

ESL Beginning (Beg)
(Beginning Literacy, Beginning Low, Beginning High)
This course is designed for students who speak, read, and write little or no English. Students learn to communicate basic messages for common situations.

ESL Intermediate (Inter)
(Intermediate Low, Intermediate High)
This course is designed for students who can understand and communicate simple messages in English. Students learn to communicate more easily in common situations and learn to understand English in new situations.

ESL Advanced (Adv)
(Advanced Low, Advanced High)
This course is designed for students who understand and use English in many different situations, but need additional study and practice to speak and write fluently in complex and technical situations and subjects.

Mastery English (Mast)
Mastery English is a transition class for students who have completed the advanced level of ESL and are considering entering the GED or Diploma programs, vocational training, or post-secondary education.  Emphasis is on acquiring the high-level language skills necessary to be successful in these settings of in the workplace.

ESL Multi-Level (M)
(Multi-level Low/High)
Students at different levels of English ability study in the same classroom depending on student needs.

MODES OF LEARNING

Chaffey Adult School ESL classes are conveniently located at two sites in the city of Ontario. ESL classes are available at no charge. We offer two modes of learning English.

Most students learn best when receiving direct instruction from a teacher in the classroom. Quality online and/or distance-learning options are accessible to students who prefer this way of learning or whose work, childcare needs, or other barriers exist to prevent in-person attendance.
